Masterchef Recap – 15 May 2011
A mystery box which had “hearts pounding out of their chests” as the remaining 23 contestants “followed their dreams” was the latest Masterchef challenge. When the “protein” was revealed, more than one heart “immediately sank” when we discovered rabbit was to be the centre piece. Who would be able “to lift the bar” in this pending “life changing event” and “break away from the pack” by “packing a punch” in pursuit of the “Masterchef dream?” Whilst we know that “this means everything” it is worth remembering that “you are only as good as your last dish.”
Side bars would be a feature tonight clocking in at a massive 59. It was a slow night for flashbacks with only 2 featured (including Alex’s raw meatballs) and only a single back story - a tear jerker recalling Cleo’s mum who passed away a year ago, causing Cleo to give up cooking right up until the start of the Masterchef season (one can only wonder at this apparent solemn pledge to never cook again....unless I make it to Masterchef?)
Strong side bar performances were put in by Cellist Craig, Machinest Alex and Bill with 5 apiece. Just pipping them were Used Car Salesman Jay and Trainee Nurse Ellie, each with a credible 6 interview appearances (although Ellie would have preferred not to be discussing her raw rabbit). The run away winner for the evening however was Chelsea, with a whopping 14, almost a quarter of the total. Regrettably however, whilst she was lucky to avoid the elimination challenge, there were few insights gained and a lack of memorable cliches.
Moving on to “plating up” tonight we witnessed 11 contestants “put up” their dishes to the judges. Of the 13 credited with at least a single side bar, only Mum Kate and Seamus didn’t make the cut.
Craig, Jay and Cleo (a certainty given her heart wrenching backstory) made the shortlist for dish of the day with Jay winning a shot at immunity.
At risk of “leaving the Masterchef kitchen” are Billy, Ellie and serial elimination challenge survivor Alex.
Mention should also be made of lifeguard Hayden, who whilst having a quiet night with only 2 soundbites continues to put up dishes which are “cooked perfectly” Finally spare a thought for Adam, who despite initiating a spectacular fire at his “work station” couldn’t quite crack an interview comment.
